Career Wellness: Is Your Work Supporting the Life You’re Building?
by Michele Hearn

“Career wellness does not require having your whole career figured out. It begins with paying attention and giving yourself permission to create a work life that supports the person you are becoming.”
When was the last time you checked on your career wellness?
We regularly check in on our physical health, but how often do we pause to consider the health of our relationship with work?
Career wellness is the degree to which your work life supports your values, strengths, energy, responsibilities, and evolving sense of purpose. It is not about having a perfect job, feeling motivated every day, or constantly striving for advancement. It is about creating a relationship with work that is healthy and sustainable enough for the life you are building now.
As a career counselor, strategist, and transformation coach, I have spent decades helping people across industries and career levels navigate career decisions, transitions, and changing definitions of success. Some are just trying to understand what career might fit best, while others are looking to move up, pivot, or even retire and build part-time work.
That experience has taught me that career wellness is deeply personal. For one woman, it may mean pursuing a new opportunity. For another, it may mean setting a boundary, reconnecting with her strengths, asking for flexibility, finding greater meaning, or recognizing that something needs to change.
A career wellness check begins by considering six areas:
- Alignment: Does my work reflect what matters to me?
- Energy: Are the demands of my work reasonably sustainable?
- Agency: Do I have an appropriate voice, choices, and boundaries?
- Growth: Am I learning, contributing, or developing in meaningful ways?
- Connection: Do I experience respect, belonging, and support?
- Sustainability: Does my work support my health, responsibilities, and practical needs?
The module created for you does not require you to score yourself or make an immediate decision. Then ask yourself: What is one small, realistic next step I can take?
Maybe you know what you’d like to do but need to update your resume. Or maybe you want to explore other paths and need guidance. You might also be thrown into an unexpected search and unsure where to start.
Career wellness does not require having your whole career figured out. It begins with paying attention and giving yourself permission to create a work life that supports the person you are becoming.
