Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is something many women experience in the days leading up to their menstrual cycle. Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to more significant physical and emotional changes that interfere with daily life. While essential oils won’t cure PMS, they may help promote relaxation and provide comfort for some common symptoms.

Common PMS symptoms may include:

  • Mood swings
  • Irritability
  • Menstrual cramps and back pain
  • Bloating
  • Breast tenderness
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches or migraines

Essential Oils That May Help Ease PMS Symptoms

Lavender

Known for its calming and relaxing aroma, lavender is a favorite for promoting relaxation during PMS. Many women find it comforting when experiencing menstrual cramps, stress, or tension.

Dilute with a quality carrier oil and gently massage onto the lower abdomen. You can also diffuse lavender to create a calming environment and encourage relaxation.

Clary Sage

Clary sage is commonly used during times of hormonal change and is valued for its calming, grounding properties. Many women enjoy using it to help support emotional well-being throughout their menstrual cycle.

Blend with a carrier oil and massage onto the lower abdomen, or apply to the wrists and behind the ears for its soothing aroma.

Peppermint

Peppermint is one of the most popular essential oils for discomfort because it provides a refreshing, cooling sensation. Many women find it helpful for muscle tension, lower back discomfort, bloating, digestive upset, and headaches.

Dilute with a carrier oil before massaging onto the lower abdomen or lower back. For headaches, apply carefully to the temples and the base of the skull, avoiding the eyes. Diffusing peppermint may also help promote alertness and reduce feelings of fatigue or mental fog.

Geranium

Geranium is often used to support emotional balance and relaxation during PMS. Its uplifting floral aroma can help create a sense of calm during times of stress or mood changes. It has also been traditionally used for relief from heavy bleeding.

For additional comfort, try blending geranium with lavender and gently massaging the mixture onto the abdomen or other areas of muscle tension.

Marjoram

Marjoram is warm, calming, and commonly used to help relax tight, tense muscles. It is especially popular when menstrual cramps feel muscular or accompanied by tension.

Its calming aroma may also help support relaxation during periods of stress, emotional ups and downs, or difficulty sleeping. Marjoram blends beautifully with lavender and clary sage.

Tips for Using Essential Oils During PMS

One of the most effective ways to enjoy essential oils during PMS is through gentle topical application. Dilute the oils with a quality carrier oil and massage them over the lower abdomen where cramps are most noticeable.

For additional comfort, try placing a warm heating pad or warm compress over the area after your massage.

Creating a calming atmosphere by diffusing essential oils can also help encourage relaxation and reduce everyday stress during your cycle.

A warm bath is another wonderful option. Be sure to dilute essential oils in a carrier oil or bath dispersant before adding them to the water, and consider adding Epsom salts for an even more relaxing soak.

Everyone responds differently to essential oils, so don’t be afraid to experiment with different combinations to discover what works best for your body.

DIY Roller Blend Recipes

Add the following essential oils to a 10 mL roller bottle, then fill the remainder of the bottle with your favorite carrier oil.

PMS Rescue

  • 6 drops Clary Sage
  • 3 drops Geranium
  • 2 drops Marjoram
  • 4 drops Peppermint

Premenstrual Mess

  • 5 drops Clary Sage
  • 5 drops Marjoram
  • 5 drops Lavender
  • 5 drops Peppermint
  • 5 drops Frankincense

Final Thoughts

Essential oils can be a wonderful addition to your monthly self-care routine. While they aren’t a substitute for medical care, many women find they help promote relaxation, ease muscle discomfort, and provide comfort during PMS. With a little experimentation, you may discover a blend that helps you feel more supported and at ease throughout your cycle.

Safety Tip: Always dilute essential oils with a quality carrier oil before applying them to the skin, and perform a patch test before first use. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition, or experience severe or worsening menstrual symptoms, consult your healthcare provider before using essential oils.
